As Christians, we often pray BIG prayers. We call on God to do the impossible in our lives, and when God hearkens to our cry to do the impossible through us, we shrink back, sometimes due to lack of strength and determination or as a result of fear or uncertainty.
We forget that when God calls us into the realm of the impossible, it takes a willing heart and genuine obedience to cooperate with Him to achieve this.
When in Mark 2:10-12, Jesus said to the PARALYTIC: Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home, he got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all.
That was a very strange command to give to a paralyzed man. But why did Jesus require such an impossibility of him? Just before this command, this man could not get up. He could not take up his mat. He could not walk a step. He was as helpless as a corpse! But as Jesus commanded him to rise up, he obeyed. At once the limbs moved, the man rose up, took up his bed, and walked away in the presence of all the people.
We learn here that when Jesus gives any command which seems impossible to us, He always gives strength to perform it. As the paralytic began to obey the bidding of Jesus, power came back into his long-paralyzed body, and he was able to rise up and walk. It is the same in our spiritual life. To walk in the realm of the impossible, we must attempt the impossible.
We have no power in ourselves to do the will of Jesus. But as we begin to obey, the needed grace is given. So many people have given up on their dream to become the great man or woman that God had designed them to be. They seem not to believe in the One who makes all things possible. So, they go through life in their own strength and unaided, because they neglect to do that which is required to launch them above impossibilities.
Human strength in itself, is inadequate to fufil purpose and meet our needs. But those who set out in obedience to Christ, depending on Him to open the path of duty will never run short of the needed help at the moment of need.
People often shrink from duties because they have not the ability to perform them. But for them, and for all who attempt any work or service in obedience to Jesus Christ, it is true that the sincere desire and effort to obey will always bring with it the strength to do the will of the Master.
We should notice too that the strength will not come until we try to obey. If we will not attempt to do our duty, we would forever remain as poor paralytics! But as we put forth the exertion of effort, God’s strength will flow into our souls, and we shall be strengthened to do the impossible through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
